What Pests Do We Deal With In Southeast Tucson?
Southeast Tucson definitely has its share of pest problems, especially during the monsoons and the warm months. The combination of block-wall construction, makeshift irrigation systems, maturing landscaping, and proximity to washes like Pantano and Atterbury make this area a favorable environment for certain pests.
The three most common pest our team at Rigo Pest deals with are scorpions, termites and roof rats.
Scorpions
We get consistent scorpion calls in the neighborhoods east of Kolb and east of Golf Links, especially in older masonry homes. The Arizona Bark Scorpion loves hiding under rocks, wall voids, and foundation gaps. It becomes more active from late April through September and tends to surface more often after a heavy rain. We use UV light inspections, perimeter dusting, and exclusion sealing to shut down access. We recommend people to avoid leaving their doors and windows open. Some of us like a natural airflow better than the AC, but leaving a door open is a surefire recipe to wind up with scorpions in our home.
Subterranean Termites
We see a high termite activity in Southeast Tucson due to the age of many of the homes and the clay-heavy soil that retains moisture near foundations. We frequently find mud tubes in garages alongside the baseboards, and under patio slabs and stucco stem walls. Termite infestations tend not to be noticeable until the homeowners see a spot where their paint has bubbled or when they tap onto a stud and hear a hollow sound. We treat termite problems by trenching and applying a long-acting termiticide to the soil barrier. Swarm season here in Tucson usually starts in late February and peaks by April.
Roof Rats
Roof rats thrive along the back fence lines and in lots with citrus trees. Typically, you will hear them before you see them: scratch sounds near soffits and attic vents. The main issue with these pests is that they chew through roof sheathing, electrical wires, and plastic irrigation lines. To remove them, we install bait boxes, we trap high-activity zones, and we advise clients to trim their palm and citrus trees to create some clearance between foliage and the roofline. Roof rats activity increases in cooler months, from December through February, when they seek refuge indoors.
